Hi, Elizabeth here with this month’s Co-Founders' Corner. Fluence recently applied to become a Colorado Natural Medicine (psilocybin) Training Program, and we are very excited about this groundbreaking opportunity.
Many therapists are also excited about the potential to offer life-changing healing through psychedelic-assisted treatment. However, those considering becoming Psilocybin Clinical Facilitators must carefully weigh legal, ethical, and practical challenges.
Fluence is part of the ecosystem that helps people become successful practitioners. Our graduates are already responsibly shaping this emerging treatment modality as licensed Psilocybin Facilitators in Oregon.
With that in mind, I’d like to share with you some of the things you should consider as you explore joining the ecosystem:
Licensing: To become a Psilocybin Clinical Facilitator in Colorado, clinicians must commit to specialized training, stay abreast of evolving regulations, and carefully consider their risk tolerance. Licensing boards in other jurisdictions and professions may view psilocybin therapy skeptically, demanding meticulous documentation and treatment rationales.
Legality: While Colorado has decriminalized psilocybin for adult use and therapy, it remains a Schedule I controlled substance federally–although the federal government has yet to enforce this in Oregon. This creates a complicated legal landscape that requires strict adherence to state regulations and recognition of potential federal risks, however unlikely prosecution may seem.
Financial Implications: Many banks and payment processors refuse to work with businesses that work with Schedule I substances (including cannabis), forcing them to rely on cash or cryptocurrency. Section 280E of the tax code also prevents deducting typical business expenses related to restricted substances, dramatically increasing tax burdens. Insurance coverage is scarce and expensive when available.
Ethical considerations: These are heightened when working with psilocybin, from obtaining informed consent to navigating spiritual experiences in a clinical context. Client safety protocols must be ironclad, with robust screening, emergency procedures, and secure record-keeping.
Despite these challenges, the potential benefits of psilocybin therapy for depression and other conditions are profound, and psilocybin therapy in Colorado offers a chance to be at the forefront of a paradigm shift in mental health treatment.
By proactively addressing these issues, we can contribute to the ethical development of psychedelic therapy and offer patients a revolutionary path to healing.
We anticipate hearing from Colorado within the next month or so, and if our program is approved, are excited to welcome our community into this journey. Join our waitlist to stay informed.
