Hi, it’s Elizabeth here with this month’s Co-Founder’s Corner.

In 2025, Colorado will launch its Natural Medicine Program, a significant milestone in psychedelic therapy and a major step towards its mass adoption.

Of course, Colorado isn’t the first state to run a psilocybin program; Fluence was heavily involved in Oregon’s pioneering program, which launched in 2023. However, while Oregon’s approach was groundbreaking, Colorado's model promises a more impactful path for psychedelic therapy.

Colorado’s Clinical Facilitator License creates a distinct pathway for licensed psychotherapists. This distinguishes clinical mental health providers from those with other backgrounds and ensures that qualified clinical facilitators are available to treat clients with specific clinical conditions such as depression, addiction, or PTSD.

The training required to gain a clinical facilitator license is reassuringly substantial, reflects the complexity and importance of this work, and ensures that facilitators will be well-equipped to integrate psilocybin therapy safely and effectively.

Building on this commitment to quality and accessibility, the Colorado regulations allow non-residents to obtain clinical facilitator licenses. This inclusive policy broadens the pool of qualified facilitators and will help foster a diverse range of experience and expertise.

Colorado also differs from Oregon because it covers natural medicines as a broad category. However, there is an initial focus on psilocybin, which aligns with promising research from institutions like Johns Hopkins and NYU. This evidence-based approach lends credibility to the program and offers real promise to those living with conditions such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD.

I am very excited about this program and its potential impact on our industry. With thoughtful regulation, comprehensive training, and ongoing research, this program could transform mental health care in Colorado and beyond, offering hope for those struggling with mental health challenges.

If you’re a mental health provider, now is the time to explore the steps needed to enhance your practice before the 2025 launch. Our blog, An Introduction to Psilocybin Therapy in the United States, is a great place to start, and explains the Licensed Clinical Facilitator role in more detail.
