Preparing for post-approval psychedelic therapy work

Preparing for post-approval psychedelic therapy work

What clinicians need to know, and do now, to be ready when psychedelics become prescribable medicines.

Where things stand as of May 2026

Where things stand as of May 2026

Several drug developers are close to receiving FDA marketing approval for psychedelic therapies. Following approval, a DEA scheduling process would make these medicines available as prescribable treatments through standard medical systems.

We do not yet have final clarity on exactly what training and certification will be required. Our current understanding is that the most likely scenario involves drug developers requiring prescribers to work alongside a team of certified mental health care providers when offering these treatments.

Certification is expected to involve training programs that work in collaboration with drug developers or other designated third-parties to receive formal acknowledgment that their curriculum meets the developer's standards for adequate preparation.

The bottom line

Requirements aren't fully defined yet, but that doesn't mean you should wait. The coursework Fluence offers now is designed to cover the bulk of what those requirements are expected to include, positioning you for an expedited pathway when a formal post-approval track is published.

How Fluence is preparing you

How Fluence is preparing you

Fluence has already trained thousands of therapists with the foundational knowledge and skills anticipated to meet the core requirements of a post-approval certification track.*

Once requirements are published, it is our intention to provide trainees clear information on how their existing training can be deemed "redundant coursework" and help them identify the most efficient certification pathway.

We cannot guarantee exactly which portions will carry over until the post-approval track is officially published. But starting now, in spring and into summer 2026, the groundwork you lay is designed with that alignment in mind, though we cannot confirm credit transfer until requirements are finalized.

Recommended courses to start now

Recommended courses to start now

Two Fluence courses are most directly anticipated to align with post-approval training requirements:

Recommended

Essentials of Psychedelic Therapy

A comprehensive, skills-based program including live role-play practice sessions with direct feedback, the hands-on assessment central to Fluence's training philosophy and expected to be core to post-approval requirements.

Who is this for?

  • New to psychedelic therapy training

  • Took Intro but haven't done role-play practice anywhere

This course Includes intro to psychedelic therapy.

Also valuable

Intro to Psychedelic Therapy

An on-demand course providing a comprehensive baseline overview. Does not include live skills practice sessions. Highly recommended for clinicians who have already completed supervised role-play practice elsewhere.

Who is this for?

  • Completed a Fluence clinical trials program (with live practice)

  • Completed supervised practice at another reputable institute

A note on skills practice

Fluence places a strong emphasis on skills practice and assessment across all programs. Structured role-play with direct feedback is central to how we prepare clinicians — and we expect it to be a core component of post-approval requirements.

Common Questions

Common Questions

Will the training I complete now count toward certification later?

We designed our programs with that goal in mind. When a formal pathway is established, Fluence plans to work with past trainees to test out of redundant content. We cannot offer guarantees until requirements are finalized, but the investment you make now is intended to carry forward.

What if I've trained at a different institute?

Fluence is committed to supporting clinicians who've trained elsewhere. It is our intention to work with trainees who pursued psychedelic education with other companies, identify redundancies and fill gaps efficiently, subject to what post-approval requirements allow.

Why start now rather than waiting for requirements to be finalized?

When approval arrives, demand for training will surge. Clinicians who've already built a strong foundation will be better positioned to enter an expedited pathway sooner and begin clinical work earlier. The window right now is a valuable opportunity to prepare without the pressure of a hard deadline.

What does Fluence's emphasis on skills practice mean for me?

A passive, knowledge-only course, while valuable, is unlikely to be sufficient on its own. If you haven't yet engaged in structured role-play practice with direct feedback, Essentials of Psychedelic Therapy is the appropriate next step. Safe, effective work with these medicines requires more than conceptual knowledge.
